Trash in the Community

Trash has become one of the most significant environmental and social challenges we face today. In Mexico, an average of 900 grams of waste is generated per person per day. In our community, taking into account economic activity, waste generation rises to 1 kilo per person per day, which amounts to a total of 6 tons daily across the community.

This excess waste negatively affects our environment, contaminating soil, water, and air, compromising the health and well-being of all forms of life.

What are the consequences of trash in San Miguel Almaya?

The consequences of trash are multiple and severe. From ecosystem degradation to the transmission of diseases, trash negatively impacts biodiversity, people’s quality of life, and the stability of our communities. Altered ecosystems, invasive species, water and air pollution, as well as social conflicts are just some of the issues that arise as a result of inadequate management of waste that is discarded in illegal dumps.

What can we do to reduce trash?

  • Consume responsibly.
  • Avoid buying unnecessary products.
  • Use personal containers and utensils when purchasing products at certain establishments to reduce plastic consumption.
  • Prefer durable, repairable, and recyclable products.
  • Make compost with organic waste.
  • Separate waste according to its type and place it in the appropriate containers.

Dispose of waste properly and responsibly:

  • Securely close trash bins.
  • Needles or syringes should be placed in a sharps container, available at some pharmacies or Health Centers.
  • Batteries should be placed in a specific container and taken to public schools, shopping centers, Steren, or RadioShack, where they will receive proper treatment.
  • All types of plastic caps should be placed in a specific container and taken to authorized centers such as ZaEely Fashion beauty salon, Torteria Reza, and Embargadero #10 in Barrio La Colonia.

Trash Containers

In a collective effort to promote cleanliness and environmental sustainability, our community has taken a significant step towards improving waste management. The recent acquisition and placement of six trash containers in strategic locations demonstrate the collective’s commitment to keeping our common spaces clean and orderly. This initiative not only facilitates more efficient waste disposal but also fosters a culture of environmental responsibility among residents.

Container Selection: The choice of trash containers was not random. Models that are durable and have a large capacity, suitable for the specific needs of our community, were chosen. These containers are designed to withstand adverse weather conditions and ensure a long lifespan, thus making a sustainable and effective investment in waste management.

Strategic Locations: The placement of the containers was carried out after a careful analysis of areas where trash accumulation was most problematic. The chosen points include busy zones. This strategic distribution not only makes waste disposal more accessible but also directly contributes to the reduction of litter in common areas.

Environmental and Social Impact: The initiative goes beyond the simple installation of containers; it represents a step forward in raising awareness about the importance of proper waste management. This action is expected to have a positive impact on both the environment and the quality of life of the inhabitants, promoting cleaner and healthier spaces. Additionally, it encourages a proactive attitude towards solving community problems related to cleanliness and environmental care.

Education and Community Participation: To maximize the impact of the containers, educational campaigns are being organized on the correct use of these and the importance of separating waste.

The oaks and firs, chosen for this project, play a crucial role in protecting water resources and soil, while providing essential habitats for local wildlife and contributing to climate regulation. Adapted to the specific characteristics of this area, these species boost biological diversity and strengthen the resilience of ecosystems against environmental challenges.
